課程概述

Oral Training I is designed to enhance students’ ability to communicate effectively in the English language. The course intends to build on and expand the language skills learned at the high-school level. An approach that focuses more on the communication of ideas than on grammatical, pronunciation and vocabulary drills is taken. However, those concerns will certainly be addressed. Continuous practice in the use of English in a wide variety of situations and functions is emphasized. Opportunities to engage in interactive dialogue and group discussion will be given, but spontaneous as well as planned speech activities may also be offered, all with the assistance of the instructor. Ideas of how culture and society affect language usage and communication will also be addressed.

This course is a language skills class more than it is a knowledge-based course. Language skills cannot be learned passively. Students’ punctual attendance and active participation in all class activities is mandatory. Students are expected to honor these requirements, and their failure to do so may result in failing the course.

課程目標
1. To improve communication skills—to discuss and debate personal
viewpoints and theories.
2. To show an improvement in fluency of speech.
3. To demonstrate the ability to express and support opinions with
accurate word choices and vocabulary.
4. To demonstrate the ability to give advice.
5. To demonstrate the ability to describe situations and people.
6. To demonstrate the ability to use appropriate body language.
7. To build vocabulary and familiarity with American customs and idioms.
8. To demonstrate the ability to listen to and understand spoken
American English.

The overall goal of this course is to acquaint students with a Western-style academic environment and encourage them to become self-directed learners in a more student-centered context.

課程要求
Your semester grade will be based on your performance in the following areas:
1. Class discussion (35%)
2. Class participation and attendance (30%)
3. Presentations and Activities (35%)

This class is not a lecture class; it is highly participatory, so when you miss class, you miss many learning opportunities and detract from the learning environment of your classmates—points for in-class work cannot be made up if you are absent. You must be in class (including arriving on time) for all three sections to be counted as present.
